10 E-Reader Cases to Sew

Have you bought an e-reader and been disappointed at the poor selection of cases available in the store?

Do you carry yours in a black uninspiring sleeve?

I have been searching the blogosphere for the best tutorials on gadget cases gifts for her you can sew for your girlfriends. Nothing says I care about you better than a personalised handmade gift. Let them know you appreciate them by sewing a unique and special e-reader sleeve for them.

Most of these wonderful tutorials come from my favourite site sew mama sew which has a substantial repository of sewing tutorials and sewing advise.

9) Colourful i-pad sleeve with pocket for headphones and stylus

This ipad sleeve tutorial by Leslie' s Art and Sewwill put a smile on your face even  on the darkest rainy day. It features a handy slip pocket for earphones and a button hole closure. If the buttonhole scares you (it scares me! never tried it) you can use velcro. I would avoid magnetic snap closures as they can affect the devise if the strength of the magnet has not been lab tested.

10) Sporty Tablet case with Strap Tutorial

This ipad sleeve tutorial with removable cross body shoulder strap is sporty looking and would be a great gift for a friend that likes monochrome or sportswear dressing and smart casual looks. The canvas fabric contrasts beautifully with the woven texture of the webbing on the strap. For extra versatility you you can add a length adjuster to the main strap.

How to adjust sizing on e-reader cases

If you are making a custom case, measure all around your devise lengthways first and then crossways, including top, bottom and sides, as if you were wrapping it in ribbon and write both numbers down.  Add 1.5 inches for your seam allowance and padding to each measurement. When sewing use 1/4 inch seam allowance all round.

Sewing Hints and Tips for E-reader sleeves

If you use heavy padding and attaching that to the outer fabric as a fusible fleece or quitling for example, cut your lining slightly smaller to accommodate the bulk. This avoids your lining being wrinkly.

To get neat square corners clip a diagonal to remove a tiny triangle outside your seam live. Curved corners need to be clipped with small perpendicular cuts.

Try to cut your fusible fleece the same as the outer MINUS the seam allowance. This way you will avoid bulk in the seams and you will get crisp professional looking edges.

Happy Sewing!!!
